Australia’s First Families of Wine (AFFW) have returned from their latest international journey to tell their family stories, share their wines and reinforce the premium Australian wine message. Hosting seventeen events across seven days, representatives from the twelve families that make up the AFFW headed to Beijing, Shanghai and Hong Kong before coming home to support the domestic market as a Platinum sponsor of Wine Australia’s Savour conference, held in Adelaide last week to wide acclaim.

There was little doubt the Australian wine industry is in safe hands yesterday (June 3) as Australia’s First Families of Wine (AFFW) held its maiden wine tasting masterclass in Brisbane to a sell-out crowd who paid $300 for the privilege of tasting some of this country’s finest museum wines.
Hosted by local media identity Rupert McCall, “UNLOCKED” featured the patriarchs of 12 of Australia’s most iconic family owned wineries with a combined 1,200 years of wine making heritage who literally “unlocked” their family cellars and presented the wines they considered the ‘keys’ to their success; some for five generations.

An exciting change of the guard took place on Tuesday as Mitchell Taylor, the third generation from Taylors Wines in the Clare Valley, took the reins as Australia’s First Families of Wine (AFFW) newly appointed chairman at their AGM in Sydney. Following on from inaugural Chairman, Alister Purbrick from Tahbilk, and Brown Brothers’ Ross Brown, this significant day in the group’s emerging history moves to further cement the AFFW as the country's leading premium wine group.

Well it seems that summer is well on its way (everywhere except for in Melbourne where it is still a bit chilly) and that must mean that the festival season is upon us. Our families have welcomed the warmer weather but that doesn't mean they have slowed down! There is never a dull moment for the AFFW and the last few weeks have been testament to that. This month we bring to you a bottle full of awards, news and achievements.

Vintage is moving along nicely for the wineries of Australia’s First Families of Wine, with some beautiful and interesting flavours starting to develop. We have seen some incredible images coming from Henschke this week.

Easter was a big event for many of the Australia’s First Families of Wine not only within their own families but also on their estates. Several of the families hosted Easter festivities at their wineries, all of which were a huge success. Brown Brothers saw over 4000 people come through the gates for the Easter Food and Wine Festival. It was a tremendous day filled with wine, chocolate and lot of fun.

Never before has Rose wine received so much attention in Australia, with 24 events held simultaneously around the country and over 40 wineries collaborating to spread the word. The Revolution message about dry styles of Rose reached 410,000 people on Twitter last month, with over 4300 tweets from 900 people joining in the online conversation.

Among the plaudits of this week’s LIWF, AFFW members scooped the awards with many nods, including gold for Howard Park’s Madbay Unwooded Chardonnay, 2009 and Yalumba’s Eden Valley Viognier, 2009 at the annual International Wine Challenge.
